Babe
I'll keep my fingers crossed. Anything that gives our youth positive options is a good thing.

I tried to set up a workshop at church, to be taught by a college professor friend, but have not succeeded yet. This too is an economically depressed area and people even if they can afford it aren't used to paying a few dollars for a noncredit class. So the friend said she would apply for a region 2 arts grant (our state is divided into regions). It takes a little time but that is probably the route we will go

Go for it! Also check with the news paper and see if you can get a column, tell them what you have told us. But be prepared to take several samples in to show them and be prepared to have a column a week ready, or just write the editor leaving out the part about welfare and pregnancy and let them know kids have options, they can do a lot to have a variety of lives. Go girl---You can do it!

granted I was in high school over 20 years ago but at the time the guidance councelors were a waste of money. I remember them suggesting I go work in one of the car factories as a career. The last thing I wanted to do was work in a factory all of my life.
It's amazing what a few words from the right person can actually do.

That sounds like a FAB idea, I say go for it.
You might be able to research ways to get a grant to make some money for it. My Mom let me know I could do pretty much what I wanted, but she didn't give me options either. I didn't find out until I was talking about putting Isaac through college that I was expected to earn the right in high school for her to pay for my college. Hmmm.. I still went, but I didn't know until a while after that I could go to law school. I thought that's what guidance counselors were for?

I think it's a fabulous idea, Bel
Directing the minds of teens - encouraging them to think outside the box and explore their confusion about what life has in store through writing could be extremely productive.
