I knew someone who had grown up calling that brushy thing in the closet,
and the flat little pan that went with it, the "broom and gride."  She was quite miffed at my suggestion that the little pan was not, in fact, properly termed a gride, that it was, perhaps a family joke.

Ah it is ever so tricky...
I used to be terrified of mixing up "groom" with "broom", and offend someone. Where do those weird and wonderful expressions come from I wonder?
