Comments on The Infamous "N" word

problem of course is how it's used

it has been derogatory for decades among caucasian circles, particularly in the South.

The word itself comes from I think the Latin for "black", so   in one sense it is  harmless.

It's like any other object.  It can be  harmless, harmful, or useful and helpful depending on how it's used.

I have heard many a comedian use that word, and many a rapper, and even my next door neighbors, all being of the same ethnic background, it's just casual conversation.

only thing, it gives an excuse to certain of other ethnic backgrounds to use it cavalierly and in a somewhat harsh manner.

words meanings and connotations have changed over the centuries.  I think when the derogatory usage can be minimized, then the word itself can be considered harmless.

Point on, archiew. Words are only as powerful as you allow them to be,
both in transmission and in reception.  By the way, the reclaiming of the 'n' word has been done with the the ebonic misspelled version -- an 'a' or an 'ah' has to appear at the end, not the 'er'.  It's ridiculous.  And so are those PC morons who deny everyone the right to speak as they please.  Political correctness is censorship.  Say what you want, say what you mean, and damn the apologists.

I agree, words are powerful
And some people are ignorant enough to use them as a way to hurt others. When we get past the silly (and derisive) meanings behind these words, we'll all be able to move on.

Haven't you heard?
The pen is mightier than the sword.  Words are powerful.
