What is so disheartening about this report, DamonL, is that, even if you
take out the oil issue, the Wahhabist Saudis are murderously opposed to the Shias, who are apostate in their eyes, so the funding of the Sunnis would continue anyway.  However, you can't ignore the oil incentive, because, even in the internal political struggles within Iraq, most of the power struggles deal with who controls the oil.  It is the basic reason the Sunnis fight a united government; it is the basic reason Sunnis fight against a tripartite breakup into three sovereign nations -- the Sunni-dominant land in Iraq is nearly oil-free.  No way are the Sunnis, who consider the Shiites traditional enemies and the Kurds beneath them, are going to allow a country they've ruled for over eight decades to leave them relegated to relative poverty, no matter how strong their faith in Allah.
