Every city has its seedy side. I can feel my antennae come out when I enter it.

“$500,000 for 1,100 square feet and up to whatever it is you get for $1 million or more”. Yikes… maybe the Square will come back to life.
Your post reminds me of a story. A number of years back when I spent a weekend in Seattle my companion at the time (a real jerk) suggested we walk to Pioneer Square after dinner. We had dined in a rather swanky restaurant and I was dressed in a sexy black dress, stockings, and high heels. Having been in Seattle a few times, I was familiar with the reputation of Pioneer Square – even by day it’s sad to see the homeless or drug addicts curled up on a bench sleeping. It used to be so vibrant and absent of such disturbing images. Anyway… I had suggested that a “walk” to the square (2 small, well dressed white people) might not be a safe idea. I even solicited the opinion of our server who adamantly said “Not dressed like that you don’t”. Mr. Jerk then proceeded to accuse me of having no sense of adventure and a big fight ensued. We didn’t go to the Square – simply walked back to the hotel – and Mr. Jerk didn’t speak to me or leave the hotel room for the rest of our visit. That didn’t stop me though – the following day I did some shopping and had dinner in a charming Italian restaurant (while he remained pouting and watching TV in the hotel room). Go figure?!?

I know it's seedy, but there's a vibe there...
The architecture, the funky shops, the galleries. Isn't Elliott Bay Bookstore either there or within a block or so? Maybe it's the artistic side of my nature, or the fact that I'm not a prospect for dealers in street pharmaceuticals, but I got a kick out of walking in that area -- usually mid-day when lots of tourists and citizens with jobs are in the area. :)pat
