I think there were many experts saying that the War in Iraq would be a disaster from the beginning. These experts included teachers, historians, students of the Vietnam War, liberals, greens, and socialists. In fact, the war was opposed by an overwhelming majority of people around the world.

So Mountainclimber, there was plenty of advice for Bush, his cronies, and his supporters to listen to. They didn't hear it because they didn't want to hear it...

Could we be in a worse predicament in Iraq?
If we stay, thousands will lose their lives, tremendous worldwide protests will intensify, children will be without parents and the once strong image of the USA will fade ever weaker.  If we leave, a country that was struggling but functional will be left in the midst of a civil war divided on religious lines that leave little or no hope for compromise and the eventual winner will most likely add to the enemy list of the US.  The talk now is of how the Iraqi government will take advantage of US support as long as it is able, doing little to help their own cause in the meantime.  This bipartisan list of ideas that has been put before President Bush is of little help because it only looks to water down an already thin objective.  Joseph Heller's sequel to Catch-22 is staring us in the face!
