No, Kat, the days of talking withdrawal have been put on hold. They may
reappear for lip-service sake tomorrow with the release of the Baker group's report on Iraq, but don't be fooled.  There will be no reduction of troops in Iraq for at least a few months.  And there will be none at all unless Congress forces the issue.  Bush has made it plain that our continued full involvement is the only solution to the Iraq problem.  Being foolishly wrong has never stopped him; Congress will have to.

When it comes to the American invasion and occupation of Iraq, Annan

has been extremely outspoken from the start, Mademoiselle.  And, yes, he has on several occasions called it 'illegal'.  And, according to international law, he's quite right.  As with most things concerning this authoritarian president, he's gone and done whatever he wants, international laws and Constitutionality be damned.

As for the ineffectualness of the United Nations, an organization is only as strong and effective as its strongest members.  Since France, Britain, China, Russia, and the United States are its strongest members and can't see eye-to-eye on too many things... you get the picture.  Add to this that the United States, if my memory serves me, supports the UN's operations (day-to-day logistics) by over 50%.  When you have your largest supporter and your strongest member doing whatever the hell they want, how effective can you really be?

Did Kofi Annan actually word it like that? Cause that's not a very diplomatic way to say it.

Have they named his successor yet, btw?

It's sad the UN has grown so weak and ineffectual.

Although, I guess it was never really all that strong to begin with.

I think they should continue the policy of not giving a Nobel Prize for paneling.
