The incident
Bush asked Webb how his son was.  (Webb's son is a Marine serving in Iraq.)  Webb responded that he wanted all the troops to come home.

Bush then responded that that was not what he had asked, and repeated his question about Webb's son.  Webb then stated that was between him and his son.

Bush knew Webb was not willing to talk about his son because Webb did not use that information as part of his campaign, even though it would have helped.  During the campaign, Webb always refused to respond to questions about his son.

Spin City
I've heard the Dennis Praegers & Bill O'Reillys of the right commenting on this incident, and from their spin, you'd have thought Webb took a dump on the carpet in the Oval Office.  Bush is a bully; when Webb refused to engage, (even avoiding the flesh-pressing part of the reception) the President pushed the issue.  I'm sorry, he's the President, not the King.  It's none of his business how Webb & his son are doing.  The same righties lamenting this "dis" of the President are the same ones who called Bill Clinton a "scumbag".  Oh well, a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.

I read your post with interest
But I don't know anything about the event you are referring to. What exactly did Bush ask Jim Webb, and what was Webb's response?
