I Blame the Mass Media
The thing that really irks me about these issues is the formula way the mass media puts them in front of us.  They are pushing our buttons, both whites and blacks, when someone not very media savy (or wary) screws up.  I hate mass media manipulation of people.  We have going on a half a billion people in this country now and you can find any outrage by any group against any other group you want and then the 2 major wire services put it out and it becomes the top story.  How representative it is doesn't matter, it's an outrage, and if you don't respond to the outrages they present correctly, well you will get yourself a label.  The bottom line is if you start waving a bloody shirt others will start waving bloody shirts and you get nowhere.

The whole thing with the N word...
It doesn't replace it, really, since we all know what it means and to make any sense out of using it we are forced to mentally insert the real meaning.  We would all be better off not to use it in any form.  I agree with Oprah on that.

Focusing on the N-Word
I think that focusing on "the word" diverts our attention from other and more significant aspects of racism that persist in our social environment. There is still discrimination in lending, employment, housing, etc. It is much easier for the public to get worked up over the polite political correctness or incorrectness of a word and avoid the kinds of issues that really impact our society on multiple levels -- especailly and including the fact that we are allowing human potential to go to waste because of racial disparity.

Kingmi
Well I like all cultures because we get lots of flavors with diversity. I think I might have written a post about my little town. We only have whites. It's always been that way and I can't see it changing. I saw a black man in town a year or so ago. He was lost or that's what the gas station lady said. People here pay more taxes because they will not accept any federal funding for our schools. They really need to get with the 21st century because these kids are going to graduate and are going out into a very diverse world..

Kingmi - black people need to loose their affixiation with the "N word"
Cracker, Spic, Gook, and Kyke can thrown around with impunity but for some reason the "N word" has become a sacred cow everyone (except black people) have decided to tip toe around for fear of being considered the next Hitler.  Mike Richards is now being sued by the people he cussed out because he used the "N word" and caused them grief.  I think he is deporable and should be out of show business but I am starting to take his side if he is subpeonaed(sp) for exercising his freedom of speech.
