Captivation, I haven't been to Hawaii, I have family who has, my Mom was in
Maui for my stepsister's wedding this spring. I haven't been to Maztlan or the west coast of Mexico, only the Gulf coast, Cancun, and the island off the coast of Cancun during a summer study program, Yucatan, Chiapas. It was beautiful, but not really touristy. At least we didn't stay in the touristy places.
I'l be interested to hear how expensive Mazatlan is, since my boyfriend and I are looking for a cheap vacation to Mexico to get out of the Northwest rain. I hope you enjoy and your friend enjoy your vacation.

It sounds awesome!
I've only been to Hawaii, on a family trip when I was very small so I don't remember it all that well... but Mexico sounds FABULOUS!
