I've experienced this dissociation personally. You can't be empathetic and be effective. It is possible, though, to be a good listener and be concerned about the welfare of those you interact with.

Probation vs Parole

Probation supervises criminals instead of going to prison.

Parole supervises inmates released from prison.

That is the difference.

Also, it is possible to have a person on probation and parole.

What's the difference between a probation officer, and a parole officer?

The county you're in?

Doing "homework."

Thank you.
I love my job. It isn't entirely thankless. I see the difference I make in society on a daily basis and that makes all the difference.

You have my utmost admiration! One must be extremely dedicated to go on and on dealing with such pathetically inadequate people.

I honestly don't know how you do it, and you must have a bottomless well of compassion inside you.

Your dedication to such an demanding and thankless job should humble us all.

Must be a hard job. I wouldn't like to do it.
