They were as good as they had to be.
It was only necessary for the Cards to win their division in order to make it to the postseason. After that it's one series at a time until you lose or win it all. St. Louis was good enough to make it to the postseason. After that it's all academic. The last team standing is the World Series Winner, not the team with the best regular season record. After all, Detroit was only the third best team in the AL. My Tigers didn't even win their division.
Congrats to your Cards from a lifelong Tiger fan.

There was a time when baseball's regular season meant something. Not anymore. That being said, who cares if the Cards were the best team in the regular season? They did what they had to do and that's all that matters. Congrats to them.
