Why baseball struggles to attract fans in the TV medium
When is the last time the best team in baseball won the World
Series? Each of the past seven seasons there has been a mediocre
team celebrating in November and it has to lead to the question "Why
did we bother to watch siz months of baseball just to have an average
team take the crown of World Champion? Teams like the Arizona
Diamondbacks, the Anaheim Angels and Florida Marlins were afterthoughts
going into each of their Championship playoff runs. The St. Louis
Cardinals were one of the worst teams in the month of September and
even the runners up Detriot Tigers were well below .500 for the final
1/3 of the season. My point is, the Cinderella Story is great
when it is a novelty. Nobody wants to see the same pseudo-drama
played out year after year after year, literally mocking the 162 games
that lead up to the playoffs. What baseball needs, really needs,
is for the best teams to be playing for the Championship, not the
Johnny-come-lately that finds itself hot for one week. It is time
for baseball to go back to two divisions in each league and rid itself
of the wildcard and divisional series. People are not watching
those and the World Series has become a joke.
Congratulations
St. Louis Cardinals. Way to perpetuate the futility of the
playoffs of what was once the most important tournaments in the world.
