The Republicans have designed the congressional districts so that it's demographically next-to-impossible to unseat members. (Democrats did the same thing when they were in charge, and Republicans have made it worse since they've been in charge.)
State governments draw up the congressional boundaries, so whichever party controls state government can pretty much control which party will dominate the state's delegation to Congress.
Extreme circumstances like these, however, can counteract the force of gerrymandering, but only somewhat. This is, indeed, a rare and essential opportunity to rescue the country from the reactionaries.

The majority is war weary and along with the mounting scandals
the election looks pretty grim for the Republicans. In my district, the once entrenched R. incumbent is trailing his opponent by a growing margin - another seat changed in Congress most likely. I think the race is on to attempt a face saving fix in Iraq. Can't have the war hawks looking like bird brains...:)
