Now four years later
George Bush vetoed the money bill on Tuesday, May 1 that contained a clause that would put a timeline for when troops will be pulled out of Iraq.

Bush talked about getting "some" money to the troops. According to Washingtonpost.com in 2005, the U.S. Defense Department has spent $191 billion fighting the so-called war on terrorism since September 11, 2001.

There doesn't appear to be any reliable breakdown of the expenses, but without a doubt, a great portion goes to the military...

My questions are:

So how does that help the Iraq government to be effective at rebuilding a country that has endured long decades of war?

And

Doesn't the continued American military presence take away any ability of the current elected Iraq government to be seen as a legitimate and effective power in the region?

Maybe with your help, I can find these answers, but in the meantime I'll keep watch as I assume many of you are doing as well.
