I actually live in a very small town (less than 3000) and for that reason I very much like what you have to say.   I do pay a little more to shop at Ransom's because Mr. Ransom never let's a "lady" carry her groceries to the car.  I shop at the little store across from my home because I love chatting with Margaret the owner.  I buy my meat often from the farmers here is the area and I grow my own veggie and can them.

For some reason I was under the impression these places also had things such as gift items, etc... for massively low prices.

yes
...that's what I'm saying and I was also saying, to Norht Americans in general, to stop buying so much stuff...a wee bee in my bonnet...a great big one actually...we do not need SAms or Walmart of Costco...we need mom and pop groceries and fresh local food, merchandice made in NA and not China, etc etc...sounds like I'm describing the 1950's and I am to a certtain degree, but it's more about creating community and self reliance and not having to be dependent on food that comes from one area of the continent and merchandise that comes from one gloabal area....OK..gettting carried away and it's a much more complex topic than what I can disect in a comment section....sorry...

That was kind of what I was wondering.  I have never been into one of these places but everyone is raving about the awesome prices, so I was curious.

I get the feeling you are telling me that for only 3 of us, I'll be eating the same box of cornflakes for 3 months?

hahahahah...
like the question, hoever the commetns are a bit unsettling...do you consume so much that a box store membership is on your mind? for a family of 3? not to be preachy....actually, screw it, I'll be preachy and say, stop buying so much stuff....all of you...

I've never been a member of Costco or Sam's Club.
There are too many FREE places to shop.

It may be helpful if you've got plenty of pantry space

or shelves in the garage to hold the large quantities. If you've got a family of 4 or more, then you can use up the products before their expiration dates. But for a couple or a single with a very small kitchen and no extra cupboard space, membership is not so useful.  There are occasional good deals on furniture and yard maintenance equipment, etc. and you can buy socks, underwear and linens at bargain rates.

My brother-in-law keeps his membership just so he can go for the free food samples on Saturday mornings -- he has no problem going back for thirds, and does not eat breakfast first, but that's just weird. :)

Costco is ok but know your per unit price before you shop.  They package things in a misleading manner.  E.g. they will sell a big bottle of ketchup and just as big a bottle of mustard in one industrial looking package.  It's a good buy but you will use the ketchup first and maybe the mustard never.  I got a really nice cupboard at Costco in Seattle.

I'm sorry, I wasn't very clear.  I won't shop at Sam's because it is part of the Walton empire.  I am wondering about Costco.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Sam's Club and Wal-Mart are under the same massive corporate banner. Boycotting one and shopping at the other is defeating the purpose. Costco is a true competitor, but on the average, the prices are higher.
