I agree with your conclusion. When my editor asked to see clips I took him clips of game stories and a disc full of sports columns I'd saved. I didn't try to impress him with op-ed pieces or travel articles.

Good points, Notapoet, I've been mulling which blogs to pick but I think
I'd better stop mulling and just pick my best "local flavor" journal blogs about my neighborhood.

You're probably okay at less than a week. The paper I write for now didn't say "boo" for a little over two weeks. I was talking to my son about giving them a follow-up call when the editor called out of the blue on a Thursday to ask me if I could cover a football game for them the following night. He liked the fact that I was able to step in that fast and offerred me space for a regular column on top of the games I cover based on my clips.
Editors tend to be busy people who may not get around to you right away. But they also tend to move fast and want you to be just as fast when they do move. You should probably have your writing samples ready to go and follow up if more than two weeks go by without hearing anything.

I haven't crossed over into "real" journalism yet, Notapoet, the newspaper
editor my friend is trying to hook me up with, has yet to contact me about writing samples, but I guess it's only been less than a week, so not to worry, right?
Anyway, the blog they're interested in is happenings in my part of Seattle, my hood. I think I can do that.

Thank you for saying so, Blanche.
When it comes to commenting on the work of others I always try to be as honest as I can unless its going to verge on the hurtful. In other words, I'd rather say nothing than give false praise. And when I like what I see, I try to convey that. You deserve every nice thing I've said to you.

As I recall, it was a particularly generous and supportive comment of yours
that made me wake up out of my stupor of somnambulism and go, "Huh?"

I've come to look forward to your comments. I'm a little surprised we never bumped into each other before as well. Better late than never, I suppose. And I truly do appreciate all of your kind words.

We seem to have a little mutual thank you society going here. I don't mind if you don't. We seem to be a couple of polite fellows.

Notapoet, this is not your usual distribution list.
I mean, Tony is right, you're very self-deprecating, in a wry way. Thanks for adding me,and again, I can't believe it took me so long to start reading you, we've been swimming round this same blog for years.

Not really. In truth I'm a pretty sorry S.O.B. who puts up a good front.
Thanks for asking. I guess I may have mellowed out a little over the years.

I love the needlessness of this.
By the way, you are quite self-deprecating. Is this your adopted persona?
