Don't doubt yourself - I bet your story is excellent so far....

Next time you talk to yourself
say, don't worry. It happens to every artist. It's called doubt. Self-doubt, the worst kind. Second-guessing yourself is certain to beat down the creative impulse and the joy that comes when the work flows. Tell your critical self to take a hike, walk counterclockwise around your chair 3 times, and then do your best. I could tell you the walk around the chair confuses the buttinski spirits, but in fact, it's just a little symbolic ritual that tells your mind this is where we get back to work. :)

Don't stop and evaluate, just get it down on paper without thinking too much.

jacenta, I'm trying!
I'm think of keeping a pad next to me when I write; then, instead of deleting something I think is awful, I just write "crap" on the pad and keep going. That way, at least I feel like I've acknowledged it.

Fiona, I think you're right
I am the kind of person who needs deadlines or I tend not to get anything done. I've set up a series of them for writing this story but Ididn't expect to get stymied like this so quickly. It has really gummed up the works.

Hi -
I think all writers have similar problems but if you're not completing any stories than maybe it's time to change strategy. Don't skip to something without a firm timeframe to return to this story or else don't skip at all. I do sympathise though, I find that the fastest way to get my non-essential housework done is to schedule "writing time."
