Lustor...Exactly right!
I learned last year the difference between cowards and brave ones. Everyone experiences fear. But what happens next is what tells. Do you go forward? Or do you cower in a corner?

Passion, maybe you should leave Dallas and start over. I would think that there are all kinds of jobs available there though, maybe you just have to keep looking. In the interim, try to be happy with what you have.
I know you get tired of hearing this, but you just have to play the cards you're dealt. Things will get better.

I disagree with one part of this post
It doesn't seem to be "common sense" to live in the path of recurring hurricanes. I will never live in that area because any year, everything could be taken away. In fact, if you live there long enough, your odds are almost certain.

No its not what they made of it, but now the questions is what do they do with what they have left. hiide their head in the sand or go on living. I almost lost everything this past year because of bad financial mistakes but I am now trying to stay above water. It was my mistake not that of a act of God. So its what you do after the error or tragedy has taken place. That tells the week from the strong.

It isn't so cut and dry. You don't give up, per se. Sometimes, because of timing, you have to step back. There have been times in my life where I planned a strategic move, but when you get in the middle of it, and not much is happening, you feel like you are doing nothing. The fact is, I'd planned how it would run start to finish because I wanted a desired outcome. It's kind of like those Roadrunner cartoons. The coyote missing him all the time because of timing. He acts too soon, and roadrunner zips by. It's tougher to be controlled and plan for that right moment to act when you have the best conditions.

It's very difficult to do that type of work...nurse, doctor, ER...they see so much serious stuff every single day...It has to be heart-rending.

Sunny, I'm not suggesting anyone live in fear.
I ascribe to living each day as if its the last. But I do feel the heaviness that's come upon the earth and I DO want to write about it.
If my posts upset you, please don't read them. This is good therapy for me. And I DO need to share these views with whoever would like to read them.

true... sometimes no matter how much we try, life can be a bucket of
shit. But, knowing that... I think that phrase means to realize that even as bad as it is, we only have one life. We have to go on, and with that, we have to make the most of the crap we've been delivered.
Honestly, some of those Katrina folks are the most optimistic I've ever seen. I don't know how they do it... but then again, how do we all?

Passion, I've said this about your job before
..the stuff you see has to weigh on you. I wrote an article on the nurses of Maryland's Shocktrauma unit many years ago. The career span there is an average of 3 years, then they have to transfer out. It's so much for the brain to absorb.
I totally agree with the concept of life is what you make of it, but there are serious parameters. I've huddled with the family waiting out a storm and we go into stories and things to pass the time. We had Agnes here in '72, and everyone shoveled mud whether it was your mud or if your house was okay. You wouldn't have known it had rained at our house, just a block away. So despite the devastation, we made the most of what was in front of us.
Still, as you were saying, time goes by. A whole group of houses in my neighborhood were deemed to be on land that they wouldn't insure after that. (We haven't had a flood or hint of a flood since. It was crazy.) They bulldozed the houses. The government paid them what they thought the houses were worth. These were large families, and this was the poorer area of the the neighborhood. In no way, shape or form do I think these people came out of this unscathed. It had nothing to do with attitude. They lost what had made up their lives. You pick up and go on, but if you are just getting by to start with, there's more to it than just putting on a happy face and getting over it.
Outside of that sort of devastation, we all have periods of our lives when it all just seems to hit at once. There are things I have no control over right now...and that's part of a big lesson I've needed to learn. I do the best I can do with the other parts, but there are huge things I can't make decisions on right now as I legally can't. So, I'm not living with everything I should right now. I think you learn to compartmentalize at times like this. I'll be darned if I'll deal with someone accusing me of not taking charge of my life either. If I did what I wanted to do, I'd be in court within a week and probably lose all I've worked for. That's living in reality, not copping out. Fine line, but there's definitely a line.

If someone dropped a nuclear bomb in NYC....I wouldn't be alive to wake up...likely none of us would.
Things happen. There is nothing you can do about it, so why worry about things that may never come to pass?
I tired of living my life in fear a while ago. Yes, I still do from time to time, but I get over it quickly, because I know it doesn't change anything. I think you are really down because you haven't had any work that you enjoy for a while, and are stuck in a job that you'd rather not be in. Hopefully in time, these things will pass, and you will be able to start doing what you love again.

It depends on what you consider perilous? I'm not afraid to die, I'm not afraid of death in any way, so things just don't get to me like they used to. The only thing I can do is live in the now...not the past, and not the future, but in this moment.

I think life is more in how you perceive it.
It's true, there are some catastrophic things that happen that can't be helped, like what you're talking about, but for everyone else, just going about their daily lives. How you perceive your reality makes a big difference.
