Talion--- Yes, it has been awhile. The last, I believe was the "Alaskan
Bush Club" in Anchorage, following an 8-day wilderness trip. Shall I assume that you are the voice of experience on this subject?

Ariel70--- Actually that's not my interpretation of "gentleman." Rather,
it's an example of how the word is used, or possibly misused. Loved that bus sign! And thanks for pointing out my spelling error in the headline.

I remember a movie where I think it was Fred Astaire who

was visiting a "Gentleman's Club" and it was mostly older men sitting in chairs smoking and reading. No one was allowed to even talk. So when Fred left he did a loud tap dance and woke them all up!

Oh dear! You do place rather a narrow interpretation upon the word ' gentleman', don't you?

For example on the old London Gereal Omnibus Company's buses was the sign      " Gentlemen do not not spit ; others must not"

When I was a child back in the 1930s I knew many poor working class people who were true ladies and gentlemen. This not from wealth or social position bu from innate good manners and courtesy, despite their often coarse, and of course uneducated ways.

BTW, gentlemen's clubs still flourish in London, elsewhere in the UK, and mebership of the better ones is much sought after.

BTW again, I think perhaps you mean " euphemisms " not 'emphamisms'?

Nowadays, so few men are gentlemen (and women ladies) that the term "gentlemen's club" actually may apply to a strip club. Or you could look at it this way. If a man isn't "gentle," the bouncers won't be either. Dance topless? Obviously, it's been a while since you've graced one of these places.
