Thanks faholo.
I was talking to a smoker yesterday and I forgot to ask him these things.  He did mention that he hates to wake up in the mornings because his chest hurts.  I thought that was interesting.  He has been smoking since he was 12 and wants to quit but it's dang hard.

O. K. here are my responses as a smoker and as
a nonsmoker. Do people who stay up late become smokers? If they are teachers, yes, cause smoking helps you stay awake to grade the ton of papers that did not get graded before you went out partying! Does smoking cause you to stay up late? Yes, because the nicotine keeps you awake and so you puff away as you watch the Late Show. A nonsmoker goes to bed earlier and so does get up earlier in the morning and because nonsmokers get more peaceful rest they are hungry in the morning also. The smokers skip breakfast because the awful nicotine and tabacco test from smoking too much the night before keeps food from tasting good anyway. So, skip breakfast, have a cigarette and cup of coffee on the way to work becasue you can't smoke when you get there.  Keep writing, keep thinking, keep questionning and God bless your inquiring mind!   faholo

I should get a government grant and study this phenomenon.

I have a theory on that one

I have noticed that too. One of the all-night restaurants within 10 mile radius of where I live has a smoking section that is inhabited by "Goths" (people between the ages of approximately 17 and 25 who wear all black and are into death and role-playing games) at night. They tell me all the "cool" people are in smoking section. There is also a kind of Pagan and Devil worship thing going on over there...

In the other restaurant there are fewer Goths, but the smoking section is inhabited by people who just got out of the bars and are mostly drunk. So, I would suggest that -- on average -- the smoking crowd is the night life crowd. They are the ones who tend to live undisciplined lives and party late into the early morning. The non-smoking group seems to be a mixed bag at night, but a good number are older and tend to read the newspaper or have other material they want to read.

I'm not sure about the morning crowd because in the mornings I go to restaurants that are entirely non-smoking. These are restaurants that are closed at two or three in the morning.
