Xeno-x -- Do you mind if I take a stab at answering the question?

"........how come a medieval religion that should have disappeared into history centuries ago still has such an influence on Christian belief?"

The answer is much the same reason that if we were to find a new viable fuel source tomorrow, it would be years before widespread use would become a reality. "Infrastructure" is the key word. All of the major religions are viral in nature, they all have built in recruitment doctrine and policies but more importantly, all are proliferated by their own momentum. Many factors built into or derived from the religious doctrines themselves are important aspects to this proliferation, none moreso than original sin. Who ever dreamt that one up was a real genious. An invisible spiritual plague that infects all persons born without exception and with the religious institution holding the only cure. Once community pressure to conform or be ostracized is added to the mix, the game can be played in perpetuity. Once a particular society becomes too educated to fall for the old tricks, move onto the third world, reach out through mission efforts and keep the ball rolling there. It's all about reaching an maintaining critical mass. Dissident opinions are met with effective propaganda. It really is a clever game that has all of the bases covered.
