Strickgold--- Thanks for reading. I agree with you. I am trying my best
avoid reading about the "Blogit wars," but accidentally stumble onto a tirade from time to time. This immature behavior reminds me of the children that I dealt with when I was a teacher. Then, I tried my best to help the kids grow up. Here, I just stay away, which is not to say that some of these people couldn't use some help  in "growing up."

Talion--- I agree with your philosophy. I believe that Benjamin Franklin
said this: 'Tis better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

Listen and don't jump to conclusions right?

I think we should opt for "telepathy" and do away with language altogether!
I always like to take shortcuts. Words are an imperfect tool in the first place, the same word conjures up different things to different people. Yes there is a common ground as far as words are concerned, within the same word, but the more people are involved the more confusing it becomes. Now try this, teach someone to communicate in a foreign language! and you think you have problems....

Julia--- Fun at parties and in classrooms, but not when a policemen or
journalists are trying to find out what happened from "eye witnesses."

reminds me of that old party game
where someone whispers a sentence or short something into the first person's ear, and so on down the line until you get to the end. The results are always hilarious because they veer off course in unpredicaable ways!

Jaz
I don't think I have read you before, but I sure will from now on! I have just finished reading your last 5 posts and I believe you are an excellent teacher. For me that is saying a lot as I am a horrible student, but I understand what your saying! Good posts!

sounds like playing 'telephone'
it's amazing how meaning gets lost (or changed) with transmission.

'woman walking across the street' becomes 'purple monkey dishwasher' after its been passed around a bit.

Jazwolf

I'm extremely careful about what I say and write. My job involves extensive communication on the phone which doesn't provide the luxuries of facial expressions and body language. Combined with various regional dialects and accents, it's easy to sometimes misunderstand or be misunderstood. Writing/blogging is even occasionally even more difficult because I don't have a tone of voice to aid me. I'm especially careful about what I post and how I comment. When in doubt, I "say" nothing.
