Tanga, you're absolutely right...
I've seen it in my work time and time again. No matter how big or deadly a disaster is, most Americans watch the TV coverage for a day or two and then forget completely.
There are still homeowners living in FEMA trailers bec of beaurocratic bullshit from hurricane Isabel which happened 3 years ago. Almost NO Americans still remember that hurricane -
I don't believe that Americans will ever forget Katrina, but they've already forgotten Charley, Frances, Jeanne, and Ivan from the 2004 season.
If a disaster didn't happen to them, then it didn't happen. Once the atmosphere is sufficiently filled with methane gas for humans to begin dying, THEN the population will start clamoring. They'll start accusing people. They'll start screaming and crying and writing books, doing TV programs --
They'll say that no one told them how serious the threat was. They'll say that the governments of the world let them down. They'll blame everyone else. But they'll still die. Bec humans can't breathe methane gas.

humans are by nature complacent and if something is not directly affecting them they ignore it. Sad but true

Thanks for the info, Flightpath...
I think what concerns me most is two separate articles...one from Swiss Scientists and one from NASA scientists saying that the permafrost is melting all over the world and releasing methane gas into the atmosphere.
How long can that go on before we begin to die???

There's hope. A UN compilation of 250 scientists' reports shows improvement in the global warning problem, although it's five years later than expected. There's more about this in one of my Aug. 18 posts.

Blanche, nobody knows the future....
I'm just guessing....I'm reading all I can about it though. I'm an Environmentalist and feel a strong 'connection' to the earth ...
Maybe if people start dying, our government and our scientists will do something radical to reverse it.

Passionflower, I couldn't bring myself to see Al Gore's movie, but it's
looking more bleak, all the graciers will be gone in 10 years? That soon? Have we gone past the tipping point in terms of turning things around, not that that's likely with so many people having so many cars, and industrial pollution, but if there were a sudden drop in CO2, would that improve things?

Blanche...according to NASA scientists....
The permafrost is melting at "Alarming Rates". As the article says, when it melts, it produces methane gas which is 10 times more toxic than carbon monoxide.
I think we'll begin to see older or sickly people dying soon because of this gas. It's in our atmosphere now but just not in sufficient quantities to cause death...only enough to cause illness.
I believe we'll see more harm from the methane gas than from the flooding disaster. It's going to take another 10 years for all the glaciers to melt. Who knows how long it will take for the polar ice caps to melt.
I do know that the largest ice mass on earth has melted to the point where it's moving. I think we should all be worried.

Maggie....you're wrong about it not happening in our
Lifetimes...Check out some of those links. In the past 9 years, the glaciers in Greenland began to melt 3 times faster than they were.
The Methane gas produced by the Permafrost melting will kill us long before we drown though. That methane gas is being released into our atmosphere daily...right now!
Alot of people think that though. They believe it won't happen in our lifetime, but NASA scientists have proof that it is happening now.

I agree with you....both.
People don't like dealing with things they have no control over because it makes them feel powerless. We also have an ugly tendency toward disassociation and distraction. We (humans, not you and I) love to indulge in fantasies where things like what Suri Cruise looks like really matter a whole bunch. Or whether or not Brangelina is about to dissolve in a firey mess. LOL whatever.
