Troosha,
especially if it's a guy...

How about talking on a cell phone AND putting your lipstick on (while driving, of course).  Now there’s a sight that makes me shake my head!!

Cringe,
personal secretaries can be a boon, but also a burden! The last time I had one (it's been a while!) she wasn't as cute as yours, but just about as messy, judging by the pictures...

Let me add, that I never talk on the phone while driving,
I fling it back to my personal secretary in the back aka Leone, or just let it ring.

Besides, I've got kids to think about.

Having a cell in hand while driving has just been made illegal in Ireland.
You will receive an on the spot fine as well as 2 points on your license.  Proper order, I used to touch text and drive, but I'm an idiot.

I don't do it anymore unless I'm stuck in traffic, still shouldn't do it anyway.

Blanche,

I actually have one of those cordless (clueless??) mice! The trouble is that, aside from the normal buttons, it has two additional ones on the side, which are supposed to help things, but don't help at all if the hand you're using ain't used to them. On top of that, my rather untrained, if not utterly stupid, left hand sometimes can't distinguish between right and left...

Lastly, my position, with my legs on my desk for 'therapeutic' reasons, and my keybord on my lap, doesn't help either...

muser,

actually, this has the earmarks (what the hell is an earmark??? Gotta have something to do with farming or ranching, I suspect!) of an interesting debate, between acceptance on the one hand, and patience on the other...

I might even do that, but not right now, no patience for it...

Nautikos, there is always an optical mouse, I'm not sure how the cord
impacts your learning to be ambidextrous.   Just be careful with those cell phones!

posted by Blanche. on September 9, 2006 at 1:56 PM | link to this | reply

Patience IS a virtue...maybe you are becoming more virtuous...

posted by muser on September 9, 2006 at 1:11 PM | link to this | reply

muser,
thanks for your vote of confidence in my ability to achieve dexterity in my left (become ambidextrous? Acquire sinistry??), but I suspect the time required would far exceed the ten days I will still have to suffer in this cast! At least I am learning to be patient. Or am I? I'm not sure, actually...

blackcat,

it probably makes a difference, though Strayer seemed to suggest it was the talking rather than the listening that was the important variable.

The other day I rode in a cab with a driver who kept gesticulating while he was turning around and talking to me! I had to tell him to keep his hands on the wheel and his eyes on the road! Maybe that's part of the problem, that many people can't talk without using their hands...

Naut, I have no doubt that you will soon have that damn rodent purring
like a cat and eating out of your hand! Heck,it'll probably be doing tricks!

posted by muser on September 9, 2006 at 7:46 AM | link to this | reply

I have to use a headset... I can definitely tell the difference if I use
phone instead.  With a headset, it's not much different than listening to the radio.  Even nascar drivers use headsets.

Wiley,
...and you didn't ask for her phone number?

OFFBEATS,
thanks for dropping in, and you're absolutely right!

Nautikos

I always pull of.

It shocked an OPP cop one day.

She actually stopped her cruiser behind me on the soft shoulder, and came to congratulate me.

I don't think anyone should talk on the phone and drive at the same time. It scares the heck out of me when I see people flying by at 80MPH and talking on the phone..

muser,

yep, pecking is the word! And I just lost the first version of this comment because my left hasn't quite been able to tame that damn rodent yet!

And you're right, we should always pull over if we must use the phone! I mean, in the olden days we had to anyway! Couldn't use a pay phone from a moving vehicle, could we...?

Justi,
LOL, the crotch bees are even worse, as my experience shows...

bel,
yeah, I usually step on it, hoping I won't end up in a radar trap...

Hi Nautikos, Glad to see you're pecking away on your keyboard! Thanks
for your common sense commentary on this subject! I use my cell phone when I NEED to use it...for instance when Max and I get separated in Sam's Club! If a driver needs to use his cell phone while driving, he FIRST needs to pull off the highway!

Naut
Guess I'm going to have to ride the bus... forgot we don't have a bus, train or street car in this town. But with crotch bees and cell phone disability I may have to stay home and order on line. Being old is getting to be less fun all the time.

I am always nervous driving near someone on a cell phone
I am convinced they are the main cause of accidents these days.

Tanga,
interesting! But then, I can sort of understand it after seeing your photo of that elephant on the road...I wouldn't want to be chatting on the phone and not missing it...

posted by Nautikos on September 7, 2006 at 6:50 PM | link to this | reply

Blanche,
look, I do agree, seriously, which is why I posted this. In my case there has been the odd exception, but usually I just turn my phone off when I'm driving, and that's that.

posted by Nautikos on September 7, 2006 at 6:40 PM | link to this | reply

TAPS,
You are absolutely right! And I swear, I will never use my phone should I have you in the car with me...

posted by Nautikos on September 7, 2006 at 6:32 PM | link to this | reply

Nautikos, I think that telling people how to live when it directly affects

your safety and the safety of others is a good thing.  You've already experienced one accident, what if the truck driver who hit you had been on the phone and that's why he didn't see you , being preoccupied?

I have learned to look to see if drivers are on  the phone when I'm crossing the street in front of them, because I don't trust anyone "multi-tasking" while driving.

Rumored,
you're absolutely right! And I wish I could say I have never, and I guess I could, but it wouldn't be true...

naorem,
you're welcome! I think the effect would be found in India as well...

This might sound
strange,  but Zambia is very strict on driving while speaking on a cell phone. A hefty fine is in place and it is enforced. One just does not take the chance.

posted by Tanga on September 7, 2006 at 12:26 PM | link to this | reply

Nautikos, There is absolutely no way that I would use a cell phone while I was driving.  It makes me very uncomfortable to be riding with a driver who does.  I don't usually give them a second chance.  I tell them, "I will drive separately and meet you there."    I do though, often drink coffee while driving.

posted by TAPS. on September 7, 2006 at 11:12 AM | link to this | reply

that's a bit frightening to imagine!
I never, ever drive and talk, it's just not smart.

posted by Julia. on September 7, 2006 at 10:51 AM | link to this | reply

Naut, its sort of surprising, but not really..I still say if a call has to
be made or taken, get off the road and take it..ot let it ring until you're safe enough to handle it...
