Since then, I've heard of a rash of revenge attacks on stingrays in Australia. Can people REALLY be so stupid?

Someone close to him - family or co-worker,
said on one of the newscasts here in the U.S. that Irwin died doing what he loved, if that's any consolation. You will feel much better if you do write his family -- and they'll appreciate hearing from you. My sister's ten-year-old son drowned and was on life support for several days, his passing made the local TV news, and she got a bushel basket full of condolences from strangers -- they used money that was sent to set up a memorial at his school and start a scholarship fund. She read a few letters every day and was very comforted by them.
