That's part of it, kidnykid, no doubt. However, there are countless cases
throughout the United States of children gone missing, known abductees, or killed that get no airplay or any type of favorable mention from the media. It generally revolves around the socioeconomic status of the family (a point you also made). I am an avid news follower and see only brief mentions of white, hispanic, and black children who are poor. The poorer the family, the less mentioned they seem to be. This is due to probably two things: institutionalized discrimination against the poor and the family's inability to finance an extended media campaign. (There is an ongoing story -- about a year now -- of a young black woman in Atlanta who is missing. However, I do not know the socioeconomic status of the family). Sadly, I don't recall ever seeing an asian or Indian case (and I find it difficult to believe that no asian and Indian children are killed, missing, or kidnapped). But overall, kidnykid, I believe you are right. Had JonBenet been a 6-year-old black girl from an impoverished family, this story would have gotten scant mention in the local news. And that is not only an indictment against the media but of our nation as well.

The only reason the JonBenet Ramsey case became such a big issue - and here, I include Karr's arrest because it provided a false "solution" to the case - was because JonBenet was cute, white, a child beauty queen, and from an affluent Colorado family. We have had a pair of black girls here in Chicagoland that have been missing for several
years, and that case never went national; I believe they came from a blue-collar family at best, and they were black. They haven't been mentioned at all, even in the Chicago media, for years, except for brief mentions in the media on the anniversary of their disappearance.
