I believe that when it comes
to important issues that honesty is the best policy, but if a little white lie is going to spare someones feelings or make someone feel better about themselves I see no harm telling it.

I took a cue from my brother -- ONLY answer the question posed to you. Typically works well in situations where you don't want to be completely honest or the person isn't prepared for a completely honest answer. Of course in other situations (like a friend asking if she's fat) deflecting as you suggested works well -- what woman wouldn't like to lose a couple of pounds!
Do I try to be honest, yes. But I suppose the honest answer would be that I am rarely completely honest because most people don't want to hear it.
