I think the idea of salvation is to show that  the law and religious practices basically negate salvation, by standing in the way.

they impose guilt upon a person,
restrictions
comparisons, whereby some people feel that they are better than others.

salvation's purpose is to erase the slate.  the person starts over, and from that point of being quite all right, reconstructs his/her life.  In so doing, understands that salvation then is composed of spreading salvation to others in the form of treating them equitably and seeking good for them rather than harm.

Interesting

But then wouldn't this imply that man is essentially better off in a state of innocence whereby his actions would remain innocent, rather than as a transgression of some sort?

In other words, doesn't this imply that what we call "evil" is evil because on some level it is an intentional transgression against good? Having brought the notion of "good" and "evil" into the world, by identifying them as such, doesn't this make it impossible for us to ever go back to a state of innocence and thereby move beyond the realm of "good" and "evil"?

We now know what we know and we cannot unknow what we know -- hence, when we act (as we all must inevitably act) we become aware of our transgressions and are therefore in need of reconciliation...

This actually would fit nicely with what Paul says in his letter to the Hebrews (I think) when he says that man can only be condemned by the law, but not saved by it -- only through the love of Christ and the mercy of God can the breach of our inevitable transgressions (being aware, as we now are, of the "good" and the "evil") be mended.

Your post gives me something to think about.

Xeno-x,
Good post.  You are correct in what you say.  I agree with you only my wording would have been that evil is the rejection of God.  I am not calling Atheists evil.  They don't believe in God.   I am saying that whenever we do evil, we are rejecting God.  Satan (Lucifer) rejected God and that's why he was pitched out of Heaven.
