Darrke...I"m not talking down to anyone!

I'm pointing out some of the reasons/excuses we all use to stay fat and out of shape.

We whine about this and that. We've convinced ourselves that's it's some impossible task that can't be accomplished. When it's really a very easy thing that anyone can do.

Once you get past that mental block and stop telling yourself how hard it is, you've got half the battle won. You must stop allowing your flesh to dictate to you what you'll do/eat each day.

Your flesh only wants to lay around and eat pretzels and watch tv. But you can take charge of it, just as you would a child, and be in control. It's a battle of the mind and of the wills. It's really NOT about eating or over-eating at all.

It's about who's in control of your life. I learned these things on my own journey to overcome drugs/alcohol and a sexual addiction. My flesh was ruining my life.

But Passion...

I don't drink Coke, never have.  I don't drink most of that stuff...only water.  I did Mtn. Dew for a while, but only to stay awake.  (Plus I gained about 50 pounds during that time...so I figure stop drinking it and the 50 pounds will melt away, right?  Not happening...)

For 30 of my 40 years I was one of the healthiest eaters/exercisers you could want to know.  I feel like I'm being talked down to.  I KNOW what I did wrong to gain all this weight.  I know what I need to do, the secret isn't there, it's in how to change the habits, not which habits to change.

I understand what you're saying Darrke...

And I've had the same experience. But you know as well as I do that you'll never get down to the size you want to be without some radical shit.

And you won't STAY a Size 12 either unless you've learned during this time, to change your outlook on food and eating....and drinking.

Drink more water. Cut the cokes. Substitue Fuze or Sobe or green tea. Eat grapes and strawberries. It will eventually work but the results will be slow unless you're willing to take a more radical approach.

You're half right...

It doesn't have to be a pill...but instant would be good.  So you eat right and exercise and nothing happens, or worse you gain weight.  That's when the "brain surgery" comments really start to aggravate.  I'm doing what I'm supposed to and the results are so darned slow.  At least I'm getting some now, but the 3 months of struggling to change those habits before I got any positive reinforcement was really difficult.

Really, if giving up Coke made people lose weight...they'd give it up...but they give it up for a day or a week and see no change then they don't see any reason to stick with it.  (Never been a coke drinker by the way...)

Bel, I probably eat alot less than you.
I work out every day. And I weigh more than 125. I know it's not fair...but boo-hoo! I'm not using it as an excuse.

posted by Passionflower on August 21, 2006 at 8:33 PM | link to this | reply

I'm one of those people Bel...but you can't use your slow metabolism
to just give up and be fat. The fatter you get, the less you do, the more you eat, the fatter you get. You must keep fighting it.

posted by Passionflower on August 21, 2006 at 8:32 PM | link to this | reply

Passion
I must disagree with you.  I have known people that eat very healthy and eat less than I do at 125lbs yes they seem to gain weight.  Metabolism has a great deal to do with it.

Nana...I know it sucks...maybe someday they'll make a pill
For those of us who can't eat carbs.  Wouldn't that be great?

Thanks Maggie...you preach it!
While we have our health and we CAN use our bodies, we should - at some point, you can get a whole list of health problems from obesity and wind up not being able to move around much at all. It's very sad to see people lose their ability to go places and do things...in other words, live their lives, simply from eating too much.

LOL Jazwolf...you put that very well!

Of course, you are a writer and a good one.

But I really see this alot when I go into towns right after a disaster. People are so unprepared for catastrophe. They're whiners. Not survivors.

If we ever have a war on US soil, a bunch of folks won't make it simply because of their poor mental and physical health.

Eminently good advice all round Why let MCdees dictate R plate-platetitude?

One minor edit ---I before E except after C except for the exceptions---heir, weight, height -- towards the end, "W_I_E_G_H_T" spells weight.

But since you do sterling work and remain a friend through silences and rankings--I come bearing the gift

LOL Homegirl...I know exactly what you're saying.
But you have to get it out of your head that it's this impossible task that you aren't equipped to accomplish. YOU CAN LOSE WEIGHT.  You can exercise each and every day.

Offbeat...I love carbs too. But they're poison to me.

You might be one of those people who can eat anythng - I know you're skinny.  But not me. I have to be very careful every single bite I eat.

It forces me to work harder at good health.

Passion--- We are a fat, spoiled society filled with nothing so much
as excuses--- and that's not only to excuse the epidemic obesity. We use those excuses to justify all kinds of things, most of them bad behavior. And you can quote me. On the other hand, unless their heft really harms me in some way, I don't engage in conversations with people about their weight. Live and live--- or die.

Thank you, Passion, for exonerating me from exercising 20 minutes a day.   I appreciate that.  lol

To tell you the truth, I wish I could do it.  I used to do it, along with yoga, and it was very rejuvenating.  I've gotten heavy from lack of exercise and I can tell you it's not fun.  If you can move your body, move it - that's the only way it's going to continue to keep moving.  (Use it or lose it!)  What you're saying in your blogs is the truth and nobody should be offended.    The truth hurts!

So right, Avant...But how do you convince people?
All they have to do is BELIEVE that they can do it and they can.

posted by Passionflower on August 21, 2006 at 3:32 PM | link to this | reply

I agree with you Jazwolf...But people actuallly get mad,

If you tel them they're fat - or if you tell them  they need to exercise, you can't say a thing about that sort of thing anymore. People are too senstive and in denial about how they really look.

I think I'm gonna write something about what a big bunch of whiny babies Americans have beome.

You're absolutely right. If we really knew how simple it was, the weight loss market would be out of business.

posted by avant-garde on August 21, 2006 at 3:16 PM | link to this | reply

Passion--- Well said. It "ain't brain surgery" is exactly correct. The
process for losing weight (for most people) is very simple: cut back on calories and exercise more. Most don't want to "sacrifice."

As a thin kid raised in a home full of "full-figured" women and as a man married to another woman of that ilk, I learned early to keep my mouth shut concerning weight loss.

Good for you Babe....Obesity is responsible for so many health probs.

I am losing weight on doctor's orders.  I just choose moderation over indulgence when it comes to food, and I schedule in one hour of exercise instead of working at the computer 24/7.  I try to do more of my own cooking and I don't neglect housework or farm work as much because those burn calories.  It should help, I hope.

Warrior...that's a key point that I wrote about several weeks ago.

I also believe that we're all going to slip and fall from time to time. Recognize this! Accept it as part of the procedure.

People fail in their wieght loss goals ONE time and they're ready to give up! That's rediculous! Everyone makes mistakes. We all fall short at times. It's not the end of the world. Just get back up and start over the following day.

And keep doing this. Be tenacious! don't give up just bec things didn't go well last week or yesterday -Keep doing what you know you're supposed to do day in and day out.

Perfect sense. We are what we think about the most.

posted by SuccessWarrior on August 21, 2006 at 8:37 AM | link to this | reply

The mind truly is where it all starts. If we are dwelling on and obsessed
with losing weight or making sure not to gain it, we are in a resistant mode of resonance...which often ends up attracting that which we are afraid of (gaining more weight)...it's as if we attract it to ourselves by being overly concerned with it, if that makes any sense?

posted by Ariala on August 21, 2006 at 8:23 AM | link to this | reply

Yep. That's why I advocate to most people to make the change slowly

Their mind changes at the same time.  Change one small thing that you "know" you can change.  Don't change your whole life because it will change back in most cases.  Switch from regular pop to diet.  Walk for 10 minutes a day.  When you know you can do that, you can make more changes.  People bite off too much and when they fail, they give up trying.  Get the small victory under your belt and then try a little bit more.  It may take a year to get things where you would like them but that's better than trying and failing and during that year, you'll see good changes.

Those good changes are the fuel that will motivate you on faster than you thought.

posted by SuccessWarrior on August 21, 2006 at 8:22 AM | link to this | reply

Warrior...so many people don't realize this.

If you can simply change what you believe about weight loss.....that's the trick. I used to think I'd HATE, loathe and despise going to the gym. But I LOVE it.

So much of the stuff we all think and believe about dieting, exercise and weight loss isn't true.

posted by Passionflower on August 21, 2006 at 8:16 AM | link to this | reply

All changes begin in your head so if you can change your thinking,
You can change your body.

Warrior - One thing we haven't discussed is hypnosis...
If alot of our problem is in our head, then hypnosis should work. Right?

posted by Passionflower on August 21, 2006 at 8:02 AM | link to this | reply

Blackcat...There's a good reason why so many Americans
Are fat and have health problems. We've totally bought into all the CRAP we see on TV. Those folks who make diet products WANT us to believe we need their help and we can't do it alone.

posted by Passionflower on August 21, 2006 at 8:01 AM | link to this | reply

LOL Warrior...I'm afraid you're right....

People keep listening to the tv tell them that they can't do it alone. They need help. It's too hard!

That's bullshit! Anyone who wants to get up off their couch and begin to improve their health can do it. It's all in your head. Once it really dawns on you that you CAN do it yourself, then half the battle is won.

posted by Passionflower on August 21, 2006 at 7:59 AM | link to this | reply

BC, I think the change takes more work than the actual work
Once you created new eating habits and your exercise has become part of your schedule, it's easy.  Changing is the hard part.

posted by SuccessWarrior on August 21, 2006 at 7:55 AM | link to this | reply

you make many good points here. Many times, it's a change in
lifestyle or attitude that's necessary... the philosophy is simple, the practice takes work.... but it can be done!

Can't I just take lipotrim and put an electric belt on my stomach?
I wrote an article that was published in a police magazine a few years ago where I made note of the ill effects of sitting on a couch watching TV, drinking Dr. Pepper to wash down Cheesy Puffs.  I made a couple of the officers mad.  All I can say is, "if the orange stained remote fits..."
