Don't know exactly but it may depend on length as well. Trivia tends to be shorter. I also find that the more often one posts, the more comments one gets. Reciprocal blogging also seems to bring in comments - read your comments and then visit the commentor, read their blog and leave a pertinent comment. Most bloggers will visit if you leave comments as well. I also find that bloggers like answering questions, so maybe the trivial blogs are asking for opinions?

I don't know, either. Maybe people are reading and just not commenting so much. It happens. I do that sometimes, read and not comment, or come back and comment later. Maybe that's the case with most bloggers. :)
