Dnace, you're assuming that the political parties want reasonable people

People who think critically, reason and look for facts, even (God fobid), change their minds as new facts are uncovered, are an anathema to power.  That's why in my ancestral homeland, Stalin shot the intelligentsia and his own officer corps, much to the Russian's detriment in WWII, because they ask too many damned questions, and don't fall into the party line.

Ditto with Mao and the Cultural Revolution.  Now, here in the US, college professors are considered some of the "100 People Screwing Up America"., not Osama Bin Laden, who is trying to KILL Americans, but college professors.

Granted, the extremes on the left are just as fringe and wacky as the extremes of the right, marching lockstep in Berkenstock, and waving the Green flag, and demanding equal rights for chickens, but like you said, it's all about polarization.  Reason is the first casualty in an ideological battlefield.

Spoken like a true commie left wing pinko. (Just kidding).

If you were a fundamentalist Christian or life member of the ARA, you would be moaning about how there are still the outlying vestigial moderates tainting the conservative political landscape.

Just like the Catholics in depression-era Germany, who cheered on Hitler because he would take on the Jews, Communists, and homosexuals for them, once "mainstream" people today get scared or angered by some bogeyman, the old precept of "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" comes to play...then comes back to haunt you.
