MC--- Perhaps I should answer your question. Thus, "their" would go with
"police." And "its" would go with "county."

MarieClaire--- Yes, I do have a good answer. "Police" is plural, so you
would say "the police are taking bribes." If you prefer singular, you should say "the police department is . . ." Also, "county" is singular, so "the county is" would be correct. But incorrect use of the plural pronoun is so pervasive (in English) that right sounds wrong and wrong sounds right.

Umm I have an idea. but I should turn that into a question.
some collective nouns such as the Police, the County etc, are they counted as singular or plural. The police is/are is then followed by its/their pronouns? That one still gets me confused, it is so much easier in French! as far as this problem is concerned anyway. I am sure you have a good answer to this one.
