What I see in reality shows is the need for people to watch other people suffer. It is exciting to see others as they squirm, or are made uncomfortable. As they are pushed and made to do things that they do not like.

It's my reality we're talking about here, and that's what's important. Seriously, as I was writing about criminals way back, I found myself watching shows like Montel and the like. I found "subjects" and people there. It has sort of evolved with reality TV.
For me, reality TV, even if it is engineered, shows how people behave when pushed this way or that. For a writer it's an interesting thing to note because we have limited life experiences. I see people who, on the surface, I can't believe exist...then they open their mouths and start to react and I'm blown away more. I think it's interesting to me that I can still be taken aback by ANY way a human acts.
All that aside, I watched the Average Joes because I had to root for the Average Joes. That's a whole different story. I was made fun of in high school and all through, so I was just draw to this group of people who sort of fought back. I think there are all sorts of reasons people like these things. The human condition has always been the major topic of writing interest for me. I like character analysis over plot. And most of the people on reality TV (real or engineered) need analysis.
