Taps
This post will take some thinking about. Taps. I hadn't considered why I read the blogs I do, and neither had I considered why people read mine. Very interesting, but I do realise when I write a BLAH post and have to change it or write it from a different point of view.

I think that having a mental picture of what you're expressing helps a lot. Thanks for the mention.

Yes, yes, TIMMYTALES. that is the kind of writing I like to read. When I was a child, (lo-o-o-ong time ago), we did not have TV or many toys. We were taught to be creative to entertain ourselves and we had books, books, books and the libraries. Oh yes, and the grand old console radio where we sat in a semicircle and listened to
Baby Snooks and
The Lone Ranger and
Cuddles and Tucky and
The Green Hornet, among others. Using our imagination to picture what was written or heard was more fun that seeing movies now.

No Taps, you tend to be very active oriented,
which is good. It gives you a very readable style, whether it be a recipe or a gentle exhortation. You are quite, quite good, actually. I really enjoy reading you. I don't comment much, but I do read.

You know, strat, I never think about watch for active or passive verbs. Now you've got me wondering what I've been doing. I guess I'll have to read some of my own posts and see if I'm guilty.

That's a very, very good point.
If something you read is flat, it probably has two major problems. One, as you say, is that it is telling us instead of feeding us, tempting us, heating us up, etc. And often that is caused by the second egregious sin, using passive voice.

You put yourself down too much, OFFBEATS. I really enjoyed that boat ride this morning.across Bowling Alley until I started getting seasick. I could feel the sea spray in my face and I was hanging on tightly as you chased them down. People wouldn't be reading you if you every day if you didn't have something to offer them.

TAPS, thank you, you've been busy and haven't been around as much
Which is good for your life, but I definitely miss seeing you around. As for skunks, I hear tomato juicei s a sure cure for skunk smell. I've heard of dog owners having to bathe their dogs after a skunk attack, which raises a whole other question, how do you get the tomato juice off the dog afterwards?
Personally, I just like my tomato juice with a little vodka and worcestershire sauce.

Funny you should mention this, because I'm strongly considering switching my blog to the "scratch 'n sniff" format.
P.S. I've heard of saul_relative.
Basically, there are three ways the skunk and I are a lot alike.
The first is, we both like to spread our 'stink' around.
The second is we both get hit by cars a lot.
The third is stripes.

Well said, TAPS, sensory writing draws me in faster than anything,
the smells, sights, sounds, and images. I think the best writing on wars are the ones that try to evoke an image for people like me who have no concept what it is like to be in a war zone, to at least approximate the feeling of fear, the overwhelming melee and confusion.
Plus as a healing thing, grounding and connecting myself to my senses, by looking out my window, and seeing what the sky is doing at that moment keeps me in the present instead of going backwards, staying stuck in unwanted emotions.
I agree PatB, Avant-Garde, and Saul Relative (the ones I can think off the top of my head) and others are amazing writers. PatB did a post in fiction on a torch singer that put so much feeling into it, adding the feelings as well as the sensory input that I felt like I was there. Same with Avant's cave. (and that is as close to an underwater cave as I ever care to get).
