Taps
This post will take some thinking about. Taps.  I hadn't considered why I read the blogs I do, and neither had I considered why people read mine.  Very interesting, but I do realise when I write a BLAH post and have to change it or write it from a different point of view.

You are welcome, avanto-garde.   I didn't think you would mind.

TAPS
I think that having a mental picture of what you're expressing helps a lot. Thanks for the mention.

That is the main reason why the book is always better than the movie

Yes, yes, TIMMYTALES.   that is the kind of writing I like to read.   When I was a child, (lo-o-o-ong time ago), we did not have TV or many toys.   We were taught to be creative to entertain ourselves and we had books, books, books and the libraries.    Oh yes, and the grand old console radio where we sat in a semicircle and listened to Baby Snooks and The Lone Ranger and Cuddles and Tucky and The Green Hornet, among others.   Using our imagination to picture what was written or heard was more fun that seeing movies now.

It's always nice when a piece is so vividly painted in your mind that you are actually transported there.

That's it, Whacky, a medium rare fillet mignon would do nicely with a baked potato with sour cream and chives and ......                  See you really have me drooling.

Thank you, strat.  Since I trust you, I'm glad I don't have to go read myself.  LOL   Thanks though for reminding me to watch for that.

No Taps, you tend to be very active oriented,
which is good. It gives you a very readable style, whether it be a recipe or a gentle exhortation. You are quite, quite good, actually. I really enjoy reading you. I don't comment much, but I do read.

posted by strat on August 7, 2006 at 7:25 PM | link to this | reply

You know, strat, I never think about watch for active or passive verbs.  Now you've got me wondering what I've been doing.   I guess I'll have to read some of my own posts and see if I'm guilty.

posted by TAPS. on August 7, 2006 at 7:20 PM | link to this | reply

That's a very, very good point.
If something you read is flat, it probably has two major problems. One, as you say, is that it is telling us instead of feeding us, tempting us, heating us up, etc. And often that is caused by the second egregious sin, using passive voice.

JanesOpinion, I read that one and it made me want to go out to the store and get me some.  LOL

Justi, You always appeal to the senses when you write, apparently without even thinking about it.

Whacky just wrote a post about eating three year old
frozen popsicles.  And she even lived to talk about it!!!!

TAPS that is a good wake up call. I never thought of it in such a
rational and of course way! You know the ah ha moment you have known forever, but did not see it was missing. This will help me.

Rumored_Intelligence, I wouldn't dare.   But, I don't think I have to worry.  LOL   I haven't seen anything to complain about.

I know what you mean, Bel.   Sometimes you just have to give up after a few sentences and go on to something else.

You put yourself down too much, OFFBEATS.   I really enjoyed that boat ride this morning.across Bowling Alley until I started getting seasick.  I could feel the sea spray in my face and I was hanging on tightly as you chased them down.   People wouldn't be reading you if you every day if you didn't have something to offer them.

I can't read a blog that doesn't touch me in some way
I must FEEL something!

Hi, RAME.  Good to see you here.  I know you are busy elsewhere.

TAPS
I feel like I write crap all the time. I have also read some posts that I just don't know what or how to respond to. Keep trying I guess! Your writing is never like that. I can smell your flowers and taste you food! Delightful!

posted by Offy on August 7, 2006 at 2:18 PM | link to this | reply

TAPS,
Great suggestion!  I'll keep that in mind in my future writings.  Thanks.

TAPS, thank you, you've been busy and haven't been around as much
Which is good for your life, but I definitely miss seeing you around.  As for skunks, I hear tomato juicei s a sure cure for skunk smell.  I've heard of dog owners having to bathe their dogs after a skunk attack, which raises a whole other question, how do you get the tomato juice off the dog afterwards?

Personally, I just like my tomato juice with a little vodka and worcestershire sauce.

I don't like my own writing at times b/c it "reads" exactly that way...
flat and one dimensional...I hope those never make it to Blogit..(if they do, someone tell me, I can handle it)

posted by Rumored on August 7, 2006 at 1:49 PM | link to this | reply

Blanche, thank you for the great comment.   You definitely are another writer that keeps ones attention by using the senses leash.   I just haven't read you yet today.   Guess where I'm going now.  LOL

posted by TAPS. on August 7, 2006 at 1:48 PM | link to this | reply

mademoiselle, I can't resist "scratch and sniff".    Just be careful with skunk.  LOL

posted by TAPS. on August 7, 2006 at 1:46 PM | link to this | reply

Funny you should mention this, because I'm strongly considering switching my blog to the "scratch 'n sniff" format.

P.S. I've heard of saul_relative.

Basically, there are three ways the skunk and I are a lot alike.
The first is, we both like to spread our 'stink' around.
The second is we both get hit by cars a lot.
The third is stripes.

Well said, TAPS, sensory writing draws me in faster than anything,

the smells, sights, sounds, and images. I think the best writing on wars are the ones that try to evoke an image for people like me who have no concept what it is like to be in a war zone, to at least approximate the feeling of fear, the overwhelming melee and confusion.

Plus as a healing thing, grounding and connecting myself to my senses, by looking out my window, and seeing what the sky is doing at that moment keeps me in the present instead of going backwards, staying stuck in unwanted emotions.

I agree PatB, Avant-Garde, and Saul Relative (the ones I can think off the top of my head) and others are amazing writers.  PatB did a post in fiction on a torch singer that put so much feeling into it, adding the feelings as well as the sensory input that I felt like I was there.  Same with Avant's cave.  (and that is as close to an underwater cave as I ever care to get).
