Fascism is fascism, whether you're wearing a brown shirt or flannel,
Mademoiselle.  I have great respect for Senator Specter and hope he can bring a little more balance back to our government.

Senator Specter has always been a man of tremendous principle and moral conviction ... not some mindless party drone.

(The Anita Hill incident notwithstanding.)

In fact, my best friend and I did some minor campaign work for him during his last reelection effort.

Btw, Bush is about as similar to Hitler, as Golda Meier is to Catherine the Great.  No comparison; plus, completely different eras

I'll turn the tables

Good point, I know it sends some people into a frenzy to mention any
parallels to Hitler, and I wouldn't go that far as to draw that analogy, but it is worth noting that Hitler didn't come to power in a vacuum or overnight, he drew up lists of Jews, kept records and then began his insane descent into madness.  He could only have dreamt of the technology this Administration has at its disposal and is only too willing to use indiscriminately.

No president has done more to weaken the checks and
balances  system and centralize government decision-making, Blanche.  Congress needs to reassert itself, as you mentioned, and take back their power, which they've abdicated to Dubya for all the wrong reasons.  Then, to send a message to further megalomaniacal presidents, they need to impeach him.  You know, I was going to write this into the post, this bit about checks and balances, but forgot it.  Gotta amend.

Saul, I was hugely relieved to see Arlen Specter champion this cause

I do believe that opposition to GW's signing statements needs to come from within the ranks of the Republicans or it will simply become another politically partisan firestorm, which he is so adept at manipulating with language.  He may not be a rocket scientist but he has proven himself to be a genius at "divide and conquer" and obfuscation and deceit.

It seems deceitful to sign a bill into law and then sign a statement immediately afterwards stating that he does not need to abide by that law. Why not veto it?  He has the clout in Congress? But flexing political muscle and arrogance have always been GW's stock in trade. His attitude seems to be "because I can".

However, I hope that will soon come to an end and Congress starts asserting itself.  They seem like a pack of whipped dogs when it comes to standing up to Bush.  It's sickening.  Let's hope for some changes in November.   Excellent post.
