Thanks...you may have something there.  I know that the whining slows down if I ignore it..but it takes so long. LOL
I'll have to try that!

Sunnybeach, I don't have time right now to read all the comments so someone might have already suggested this.   I have had lots of practice with this because I have worked with children of that age all my life.   The thing that has always worked for me (because I abhor whining at any age) is to say to the child, "I will not hear you or respond to what you want until you talk to me in your normal voice."   At first they don't even understand what you mean and don't believe you but if you stick to it they will begin to try.   Sometimes, if this is new to the child, it will take as many as eight or ten tries, moving down in pitch each time until they get it right.   I just keep saying, "I know you are trying but that is not your normal voice yet."   When they finally get there, I always reward them with my full attention and solutions to their problem or get them what they were wanting.     If it is tattling that they are trying to do, we deal with that after they reach their normal voice because that is another thing that I cannot stand.

Sunny

I would agree with Avant.....Nanny 911 rocks! Her techniques seem to work.

I don't have kids....so I can't give any advice from personal experience.

Where are you?

posted by Offy on July 26, 2006 at 9:32 AM | link to this | reply

Well
Having a 4 year old myself, I would say to listen and ask what is wrong. Repeat his request, so that he knows you are listening, and then explain why it can't happen the way he wants it to. Offer alternatives, or maybe even a reward for choosing something else. I learned that from Nanny 9-1-1.

I wish there was a simple solution
If you find an answer that works please post it, I could do with some advice as well.

LOL.  Do they EVER grow out of it?
My daughter still whines at 9yrs.  It was a lot easier and still is, to get her to stop than is my son.

the old imitation trick used to work...I'd whine like daughter was doing...

I can remember her stopping, looking at me, and saying, "Dad, you look funny."  I just said with a grin that she did, too...end of whining....

now she just whines when she wants me to co-sign a loan.....

Actually, I've tried that with my son, and it either has no affect, or it starts him laughing, but still doesn't stop him!

Duct tape!!!!!!
Actually what I used to do to my daughter was when she starting whining I would imitate her.  It made her crazy but she did stop!
