It's the acid in the urine that allays the pain. I've been told that vinegar is the remedy of choice for first aid.

We used to have a very open gay employee and he would entertain the break room with his "informative" tales on some of the perversions of some of his acquaintances. He could spin some wildly disgusting tales...

Yes I have been stung, but warm water is a good quick relief. I suppose if you don't have access to that then pee would work!

nanaroo - soaking in hot water is also an excellent way to extract things
such as blackberry thorns, etc.

i've never been stung (but now i'm wondering if that's how the habit of
using vinegar on fish and chips got started) but i have been peed on. by dogs.

yes, it did- I called poison control and they had me soak it in water as hot as I could stand for about two hours. I would have thought to ice it but with sting-rays, it's very hot water that works.

RMA is right, although a lifeguard should have some handy. Vinegar, I mean.
- First remove any adherent tentacles that will cause further delivery of venom. The tentacles should be lifted off the skin (don't scrape them off -- this causes further stings). Use a stick or some other object to remove the tentacle(s) so as not to get your fingers stung.
- Next, rinse the affected area with sea water to wash away any adherent nematocysts. DO NOT use fresh water, since this will activate the nematocysts. DO NOT scrub as this will only activate the nematocysts and cause further venom delivery.
- Nematocysts are inactivated by vinegar (or dilute acetic acid 5-10%). NOTE: If no vinegar is handy, then human urine will do in a pinch. If you have a choice in the matter, use a man's urine rather than a woman's urine. This is because females are more prone to occult urinary tract infections, thus introducing bacteria. Male urine is considered sterile, since men are much less likely to have a urinary tract infection.

It's not the salt in the urine, I believe it is the acidity...vinegar works
to but who brings vinegar to the beach? LOL

Urine is sterile. Maybe that's what it is-you don't want salt, ie ocean
water, and pee is usually readily available and sterile, thus safe and soothing. LMAO!! I'm going to ask.com to put this to rest. BRB

Doesn't sea water do the trick if its only about the salt? I don't know. Lol.

Hmmmmmmm. This is all quite odd. Tinkled on? Wow. We have a picture
of our oldest when she was just over one year old. She was naked at the beach and when I asked her to smile for the camera she did-just as she peed on my husband's foot. It's a treasured family photo that always makes her ask, "But WHY did I pee-pee on daddy's foot?!"
