I disagree...
I think that may be true sometimes but I think more often than not, things don't work out because people give up too easily in this day and age. I don't mean you but the man who left you. He obviously has defects in his personality and one of them is not being responsible for his actions. He made a commitment to you by having a child with you and he is still that child's father regardless of what happened between you two. The fact that he doesn't seem to be much of a father shows he has serious character flaws and he won't be good for anyone until he deals with those issues.
At the same time, don't throw away someone in the future because they don't meet some requirement you've set up unless that requirement is being responsible and not being an abusive person. You don't want that in your life.
But don't throw someone away who needs work because they just might be the best person in the world for you if you are a little patient with them. And, keep in mind that men always need a lot of patience because most of them are simply little boys in men's bodies.
If you look for perfection or near perfection, you will never find anyone right for you.

In my last divorce...
I came to the conclusion that we were right at the time, but the time passed quickly. I think we both got something we desperately needed from the relationship, but the potential for "forever" just wasn't very good. I helped him through a depression that could have turned into suicide. I really believe my being there probably saved his life. And I got pregnant with my son, which helped me move on and live after losing my daughter.
