I feel pity for Lay, whether or not he knew about the Enron scandal. Many insiders believe he had little to no knowledge of it. Hard to imagine a person in his position NOT knowing. On the flip side, being accused of such deeds, and feeling oneself innocent could be a huge stress contributing to his massive MI.
But regarding the money, from what I've heard, he spent most of his massive resources on his defense, although I'm sure his wife will still be able to live in some comfort.
