Good question!
The "link" is the common theme of a gloomy evening falling in a gloomy setting. Truth to tell, I didn't even plan that symbolism of fireflies! Glad you discovered a nugget I didn't even put there!

I like that line evening dark as death, but...
I feel there is a link missing, how does it attach itself to the previous line? Sorry must be me, but I also like the fragility and precarity of life, symbolised in the ephemeral fireflies. The atmosphere is the poem is suitably gloomy, no one escapes death even the brightest patch of green will turn into gray, one day. Not a happy prospect, but realistic.

"dark as night?"

Do you mean "evening dark as death" ? Trying to sustain the gloominess of the scene.

I like the imagery.
except the line dark as night, it does not quite fit somehow, may be I am wrong...
