i can remember at uni sharing a flat on residence with
6 boys and 1 girl. Every holidays we used to get nervous as to what was left in the fridge because the boys always went home and never cleaned up their mess. Myself and the other female flatmate once found rice that had turned pink!!!!!

Not in the fridge
Tanga, they weren't in the fridge, they were on a low open shelf, kinda towards the back. I didn't really see what was going on with them

Communication
It sounds like a simple communication problem. I definitely agree that spiteful actions are not the answer. If I was your room mate I would have made a light comment such as "Are you planning to plant those tomatoes?" to highlight that I was not happy with vegetable cultivation occurring in the fridge.

some people just don't communicate... and psychic communication
is not all that reliable...

Sardines on my bed?
No, let's keep this confined to the kitchen. Since I didn't put anything on  her bed she'd have no right putting anything on mine.

You goofed! Made a mistake!
The problem is, your roommate took it personally, got insulted and nose out-of-joint even though you didn't intend to yuck her out.  If you care what she feels and thinks, do something nice to make it up to her. Doesn't matter whose fault or any of that jazz. And next time you bring home something that can rot, use it or toss it on time. When you're sharing space with other people, you have to be nicer than you are. (It's been 20 years, and I still haven't forgiven my ex for leaving his nasty socks all over the place for me to pick up...)

No ... but I've certainly had a messy room.

I think a much more mature way for your roommate to handle the situation would have been to just simply throw out the tomatoes, and say nothing more of it.

Oh, and then, several weeks later, secretly spread some spoiled sardines all over the sheets of your bed.
