yeah i know
it takes a lot to get kids not to harm other things
i did that some as a kid -- snakes were a fearful thing then -- and
then it's the pack instinct to -- all gathering together to take out a
perceived threat.
it takes understanding.
i had a garter snake hang out around our yard here -- had a nest
underground -- had babies that slithered through the front grass and
confused the dog. don't know what happened to them.

I think your boys will be fine.
I think a lot of it is in the parents' teaching, or lack of it.
I know my son (3) tortures the cats, no matter what we do or say or how many scratches he gets, but I hope he will grow to understand that this kind of treatment is not acceptable.
When I first let my daughter out on her own to play in the neighborhood, she would come home and tell me about some of the boys talking about killing bunnies and such. This was a nightmare for me, lol. I wanted to lock her up in the house away from them.
But I know she knows that we shouldn't hurt things on purpose. Now if I could just get her to follow that rule with her brother.
