LOL, I think the inability to work a self check out is a male thing.  My husband tries and drives me crazy until I finally say..."There are people in line behind us.  LET ME DO IT!!!".  Personally, I resent the self checkout and don't often use them solely for the fact that they take human jobs.

I hate Wal Mart too!!

Every time I walk in one I am afraid.

Why afraid? I don't know.  Toss up between the overwhelming corporate takeovering; the smell of fresh polyester and other items unknown to organic nature; the sticky pools of I don't know what that is on the floors; and the scary scary people. Sorry.  They are scary.

How do you like those self checkout lanes. ....
You know....the ones that NEVER FREAKING WORK and you still have to have someone help you that can't and you have to wait for them to show up and then they have to call a manager because God forbid they should actually have the authority to deal with their own stations! And why have one person over four non-functioning stations? What was wrong with having some freaking PEOPLE there even if they were IQ test failures? Sorry, did I just vent? lol If you want to see Walmart at it's absolutely very worst, go to any major city in Texas and prepare to cringe. I got one explanation for it....Mexican. And I don't care if it is or isn't politically correct. I been there, I seen it and that is exactly what it is. There, now I can lay me down to sleep and pray for all those Walmart creeps!

I would have filed a complaint against both the store manager and the customer!

I didn't know that!  Carl is a union Carpenter and that is something I have never heard.  Now I am REALLY done with them!

posted by bel_1965 on June 27, 2006 at 6:50 AM | link to this | reply

Anyone who supports unions - carpenters, plumbers, etc...
avoids Wal-Mart because it will close a store rather than let employees organize. The reason things in Wal-Mart are cheap is because the workers are paid so little: barely above minimum wage, their hours are restricted so they never quite qualify for company-paid health care. If you shop there, thank the employee for her contribution to your budget.  The reason a latte at Starbucks is so expensive is that the CEO set up a business plan that includes paying baristas a good wage and company paid health care.

Carl is going to have to keep an eye on you, Bel!
Or maybe you just want to buy him a UPS  uniform for fun!

Bel, I hate Wal-Mart!!! I don't really know what's so great about it...
btw, I use to work at Meijer...I treated the "guests" better than they treated me.  Some guy hit me because the razors weren't on sale, no joke!

Hmmmmm
We may be onto something here.  No lines, no crowds, no idiot sales people and everything brought to our door!   I am liking this!!!

Yess!! Let's hear it for online shopping and men in shorts!

posted by Blanche. on June 26, 2006 at 2:49 PM | link to this | reply

Oh yes we have them.
They aren't any better here!  I swear if I could do all my shopping online I would.  At least my UPS driver is friendly and helpful...even if he is too short for me and I knew him in middle school!

I hear ya, Bel, we took our photos to Rite-Aid (do you have those?)

or is that a West Coast chain? Anyway, it's a drugstore.  I got so frustrated months ago, I walked out and left the thing I was buying behind. There were three cashiers standing around gabbing, while one  had a line a mile long. I walked up to the ones talking and asked if they could help me, and they acted like I was interfering in a conference on world peace. Granted, the cash registers might have been not working or something, but try catching someone in the photo department.

I'll even walk an extra mile (lol, that sounds like the Camels commercial), to go to Bartell's cause I'm getting so fed up with the lack of service.

I'd like to see them seriously struggle
with their bottom line and see if service changed then.  I don't know, I am just sick of spending my money in a place that does not even value their customers!

I would go to Walmart, if their prices were really all that cheap, but they
have loss leaders on some things, but the rest are as high as anyplace else.  It's just a common misperception that they're cheaper. What they really are doing is racking up a huge profit margin.  You'd be surprised where they turn up.  My mom lives out in BFE on a peninsula 100 miles away, and Walmart's already there.

Rumored
I do hope that happens.  These days people seem to like BIG.  The bigger the better.  I prefer service over big.

Wal-Mart thinks they have the shopping world on a string....
they will find out soon enough thats not true, if people go elsewhere..no need to boycott them, just let their sales figures drop normally..and managers will be panicking....

Luckily I live in a small enough town that we have a few of those left.  I doubt Wal-Mart will be infiltrating a town of 3000 anytime soon.  It's still a shame.  When I worked retail, my entire job was about the CUSTOMER, I still expect that kind of service today.

I agree... time is money. We don't have many Walmarts, but if it's
that much of a hassle, I wouldn't go back either.   I miss the customized service of small mom&pop stores.

It could happen, Bel, if they keep running the smaller businesses out.
There are no Walmarts in the greater Seattle area, but MG and I counted 6 businesses in our neighborhood that have gone under in the last year or so. I have no idea why.

Bel, not if Walmart is the future retail business model of America

I have to agree.  Lower prices are great but when you lose PAYING customers because service is so bad you need to rethink your business plan.

Ditto!  I work for Sears for many years.  I have to say if you are going to work in retail they are one of the better companies when it comes to benefits, etc...

Well, personally, after all my years in working retail, I get pissed that
the richest corporation on the planet, wants to deny their lowly employees their measly half-hour, unpaid lunch break.  That's just wrong.

I won't be going back.  Yes, their prices are a bit lower but by the time I am done wasting MY TIME it is not worth the couple of dollars that I save.

Bel,maybe you SHOULD boycott Walmart.
For a whole variety of reasons, especially for them making you feel like you've interrupted their soaps. I get that feeling here at the local drugstore, Rite-Aid.  Can I get any help in the camera department?  I think not.
