Folks in the "liberal north" may not wear white sheets or be secret Klan members -- but they discriminate and reduce the quality of life for people of color all the same. They smile, shake hands, and then refuse to hire "certain people."  My wealthy boss once told me poor people are just lazy or they'd stop being poor. She didn't know I'd watched my mother work her ass off in our garden and selling Avon so she could stretch her $80 a month ADC check to feed and clothe three growing children. It ain't burning crosses and masked riders grabbing men at midnight, but the callous disregard for human rights among the so-called upper classes is just a slower, colder means to the same end: keeping folks "in their place."
