About that theory you posited -- our ancient hunter-gatherer brains need stimulus -- as the reason otherwise sensible women marry abusive losers: I think you're on to something. And it seems like that same theory applies to terrorists and fanatics who have to be fighting or at least jumping up and down, screaming about something in order to exist. :)
