Background checks

All police departments are different but most check to make sure the person doesn't have a criminal record or is associated (i.e. relative of or married or living) with someone who has a serious incident on their record. They don't generally care about stuff like credit history unless the person would be in a position to handle money in the job they are hiring for.

Some don't even care if the background check turns up something like a DUI, although in that case, alot depends on the city. Some are more touchy about that than others.

Don't worry about the credit stuff Jemms.........good luck on the job !

Hope the background check goes well - it's OK to be nervous.

Jemmie...

Good luck with your background check and your new job.

Horrible credit should not adversely affect your qualifications as government employee unless you have some seriously questionable debt load, a few defaults, and a foreclosure or two...

Even if you've filed for bankruptcy, it shouldn't stop you from passing a background check.

Mostly, they look into your history of drug use, alcoholism, crime, and mental stability.

They'll also check your family for connections to criminal activities and/or psychiatric problems.

When I endured my check some thirty years ago, they even asked about a history of suicide in my family (of which there is none.)

Again, good luck.
