A public school officially apologizing to Christian students?
(The Writer of Light faints dead away in utter shock!)

Ha ha, Leroy, that's a good one!
Thanks for sharing!

tolerance
Jane, tolerance is a two-way street but in this society someone is always in the passing lane.

Wonderful post and good discussion

Hi Jane, I'm back, finally. So good to read stuff from my old friends on Blogit.

I think the most painful thing about this controversy (and most others along this line) is the blind arrogance that would lead me to believe that my view of God is better than yours. If we profess to be Christians then we have no right to judge. Where is love, understanding, compassion and the Golden Rule in all this?

Amen, kidnykid! Thanks for stopping by.

I agree - those kids should be allowed to express their opinions via sayings on T-shirts. It's not as if they're beating up on classmates or anything.

WritersBlok, we need to respect people for their differences
even when we don't agree.  I would concur with your comment.

R_I thankfully there are some good attorneys out there who will help

with these matters -- pro bono.  It's ridiculous!  And I bet, if that student had thanked Allah for his or her success, or the Great Buddha . . . it would not have been bleeped.

What the blankety blank is this world coming to!

Justi, you're right, sadly.
Why do six year old kids (and younger) have to hear about homosexuality?  They're teaching them at ever younger ages to be tolerant of deviant sexual behavior, and intolerant of the traditional family.  Very sad.

Nautikos, sorry to take so long to respond . . .
And I would say that's a great idea!  Turn a negative comment into something positive!

I heard another valedictorian had the word "god" bleeped out of her speech.
the other night..just the word "god"! no actual mention of Jesus...this is certainly not tolerance of any type...the right to make a "free" speech will soon be gone completely if we're not careful..

Janes
Children were educated for thousands of years without sex having been a part of the discussion in any manner. Why is it necessary now? Why are children too young to be sexually involved being allowed to be involved. The whole thing is warped. It is as God has warned "in those days men will call bad good and good bad" it is here, today and now. It is Holy Liberalism breaking out all over the place. Keep them coming

Jane,
I think tolerance should be a two-way street but we all also have the responsibility not to be openly offensive to other people's lifestyle choices.

Jane,

there is no doubt in my mind that the whole notion of 'tolerance' is shifting under the weight of current PC (political correctness) in favor of specific points of view.

But as a matter of tactics, if I were, for example, against homosexual marriage, (which I am, incidentally, I think it's ridiculous!), under 'repressive' forms of 'tolerance' I would simply state my 'pro' position, i.e. 'I am for heterosexual marriage', and have them try to arrest me for that

TAPS, I think you're probably right --

but it still comes back to a freedom of speech type argument, eh?

But regarding the message they were trying to share -- as I mentioned to Blanche01 -- there are definitely better ways of doing it!

JanesOpinion, IMHO, T-shirts with messages is the worst idea anyone ever had--except for making money for themselves.

kingmi, I never had to wear a uniform, but I would have to agree with you.
The selections are a bit monotonous, but think of all the headaches that would be avoided!!

Blanche01 -- excellent point.

Defining "offensive" is going to be difficult.  As well, there ARE better ways of getting one's message across then the front of one's t-shirt.  I think the students, if they don't approve of the gay lifestyle, would be better served reaching out to those pro-homosexual students and loving them unconditionally in the name of Christ.

You make some very valid points!

JanesO, I wore a uniform 6th, 7th and 8th grade. Happiest of my
school years.

JanesOpinion, as much as I might dislike the sentiment expressed by their
t-shirt, I don't agree with the ultra-PC crowd that anything that is "offensive" should be censored or banned.    In fact, just try defining "offensive", after all..  However, I still believe that the intent of those students is, well, tacky.

Flightpath, you're right.
We definitely cannot roll over and let them walk all over us.  Rather, respond with respect, firmness and kindness.  But be strong!

Kingmi, I think all kids should be required to wear school uniforms.
That would take care of the problem!

posted by JanesOpinion on June 18, 2006 at 5:31 PM | link to this | reply

Blanche, I see your point, a little, maybe, sort of.
But the Christian students, nonetheless, are entitled to express their opinions, right?  Just as the pro-homosexual students also do on a regular basis? In a "free" society, shouldn't there be tolerance of these opinions?  Tolerance of the right to this freedom of speech??????

JanesO, I am against politics for or against in the schools. And gangs!

JanesOpinion,

Well, in the first instance, I'd hardly call wearing a t-shirt, describing their intolerance towards a number of different groups and activities, tolerance on the part of the Christian students.  They are openly baiting opposition viewpoints.  Where is the tolerance in that?

As for the beating on the schoolyard, that was deplorable.
