bel_1965,
I love semicolons!!! Where would we be if we hadn't had the semi for our pinky fingers during typing class?  Okay, I'm just having fun; and telling my age again.  Just a little delirious humor from someone who's been working too hard, lately.  If Jazwolf if still reading this, I hope I used the semi correctly.  :)  Seriously, these are good tips.  Thanks for sharing them.  :)

I LIKE PUNCTUATION IN GENERAL
I LIKE TO USE COMMAS. I HAVE ALWAYS FELT THAT MORE COMMAS SHOULD BE USED.   I LIKE TO SHOW WHERE I AM , UH,  PAUSING.  I WRITE HOW I TAWK SO I NEED COMMAS.

It is disheartening.  Honestly, I don't recall even having a teacher bring up either in a class until I entered college.

Bel--- I see them much more abused than used properly. If it were up to me,
I'd take them off the keyboard. Yes, they have a purpose, and I occasionally use them (correctly). But, truly, they are not necessary. Since most people do not know how to properly use apostrophes, which are much easier to master, I have little hope that they ever will properly will use colons and semicolons.

That is one of the things about writing and the subject of English.  The rules change and about the time we get used to the new way, they change them back LOL!    I think comma rules are about the worst for ever changing rules.

Realistically many simply do not use it.  One of the reporters joked about the last Editor I worked for, that they quit using colons or semi-colons because they seemed to send him into a tailspin.

Bel

As no doubt you've noticed while reading my blog, I use both a lot, not always correctly ; hell, let's be honest sometimes downright incorrectly. But good writing, like good speech should always show a knowledgeog the rule from which it departs.

This is a matter of impact and style, I believe, so a little leeway is permissible. A colon/semi colon make a nice break, especially in a poem. Adds impact to what follows.

Not so long ago, it was mandatory to place a colon before direct dialogue, where we would now place a comma. Another custom, redating that, I think, was putting a space at each side of punctuation marks, a preactice that i follw with colons and semi colons.

With computer generated text, they are often invisible -- jammed against the previous letter.

Bel,
This is good review.  No colons with forms of "is" or "are" is news to me.  Embarrassing.

Boy, do little semi-colon correction and SOME people get in a huff.
And I thought you LIKED correction....

You'll never believe this but once I wrote a post
Discussing the idea of elimanating the semi colon altogether bec most people DON'T know how to use one. I got quite a few angry comments from (so-called) linguistic experts who were outraged at the idea.

Please don't take this blog as the only way to write.  I am simply giving you some basic's of the technical end.  Remember you must always FEEL what you write, no matter how perfect your grammar may be, your writing still requires HEART.  That is something that can only come from the writer.
