I should take this approach
with my kids, and in the classroom. I have noticed that when I speak quietly and calmly, I'm more likely to get a reaction (with most classes).

Straightforward
I couldn't agree more. There are some here who could benefit from your words. Actually, I've noticed that when somebody speaks calmly and quietly, people often lean forward in order to hear them better. Someone who shouts eventually loses his voice

Straightforward, agreed, calm is best
It is better to wait till calm to discuss points of contention. That way, rationality and reason prevail, not passion and ego.
